When we reach our mid-thirties, many women experience a shift in their mid-line.

It could be just an extra kilo or two, but it all seems to sit on the waist – and fights to never leave.

And even if you up the ante and put extra time in on the treadmill, that pesky bulge just won’t go away.

And the reason for this is – it’s got more to do with hormone imbalance.

And yes. Diet and healthy living do positively impact your hormones. But only if you know what you’re actually doing. And what your unique make-up needs is to find balance.

So let’s backtrack.

What’s causing the uncomfortable weight gain to begin with?

As the body moves past the reproductive years, women will see a downward trend in their progesterone levels.

On the other hand, estrogen will fluctuate more than usual. Sometimes, even within a single day, it can be considered ‘in excess’ and at other times, low.

Unfortunately, both high and low estrogen can cause weight gain.

An excess can irritate insulin-producing cells, which can lead to insulin resistance and hence an increase in blood sugar levels, that can then lead to increased body fat.

Low levels of estrogen, however, make it harder for your body to break down starches and blood sugars – so this also can cause weight gain.

And this weight can be particularly stubborn to release.

So what can I do to support my hormones?

Well, the levels of estrogen found in the body are modulated and metabolised by a collection of bacteria in the gut called the estrobolome.

So getting your gut health spot-on is essential.

And the key to a healthy gut is to start with the right anti-inflammatory diet.
