So you think you’re heading into, or you’re already deep in, perimenopause.
And, just for fun, you’ve also started to experience random bouts of anxiety.
Is the world just out to get you?
Haven’t we women been through enough!
Well, the good news is – there are (solvable) reasons why this is happening. And although we don’t want women to be living with anxiety, you’re definitely not alone.
Over 60% of women experience severe spells of anxiety during perimenopause.
So let’s look into the reasons why.
Estrogen, serotonin and your gut
So one of the common signals that your body is moving toward perimenopause is the uneven rise and fall of your estrogen levels.
And when estrogen drops suddenly, it can contribute to those intense feelings of overwhelm, worry and fear.
Ok but what does that have to do with the gut?
Well, estrogen is metabolised and modulated within the gut, through a collection of bacteria called the estrobolome.
So if your gut health is compromised, so is your ability to regulate your hormones.
This includes another important hormone in mood regulation – the “happy hormone” serotonin.
Almost 95% of the body’s serotonin is manufactured by the bacteria in our gut.
So it makes sense that, again – if the gut is not functioning optimally, your serotonin production will be severely impacted.
So how do you support your gut and hormones?
One of the easiest ways to support your gut health – and in turn your hormones – is to follow a well-designed, anti-inflammatory diet.
You can support your gut health by following a supportive anti-inflammatory diet. Dr Holland has designed a 5-Day Meal Plan specifically for women aged 35 to 55 years of age. Click below to download your copy.
